LG Group opened a giant research and development complex of its own in western Seoul.

The complex, dubbed "LG Science Park" and claimed by the fourth largest Korean business conglomerate to be the country's largest of its kind. It has been built on a land site of 170,000 square meters which is equal to the size of 24 soccer fields, housing 20 laboratories.

Some 17,000 researchers from LG Group's eight major affiliates, including LG Electronics Inc., LG Display Co. and LG Chem Ltd. are now working at the R&D hub which cost 4 trillion won with its construction lasting four years.

The conglomerate plans to increase the number of researchers to 22,000 by 2020.

President Moon Jae-In attended and addressed the opening ceremony of the complex, expressing his administration's expectations and hope for the creation of good jobs. He also pledged government support.

The center also focuses on the development of technologies used in the self-driving vehicles, involving the fifth-generation telecommunications network and automotive parts and sensors.

In addition, the LG campus is equipped with the so-called "Joint Lab", an open space for small and medium-sized companies and venture startups, as well as a facility for collaborative R&D projects by domestic and overseas enterprises.
