South Korea's western port of Incheon has become the country's first city to operate a bimodal tram.

The tram has the advantages of both bus and train and allows easy access for young children, elderly, and the disabled.

With the appearance of two buses linked together and equipped with a hybrid system, the tram runs on rubber tires.

The tram, which costs 1.5 billion won (US$1.4 million) per unit, can carry up to 103 passengers.

"The bimodal tram is a novel means of transportation. It can be called a subway train running on the road."

The tram travels a 13.3-km route between Cheongna International City and the Gajeong subway station in Incheon.

Currently, the Incheon city government operates four tram units and plans to run an additional 12 units on the road by 2020.

The fuel-efficient tram system is regarded as a highly useful means of transportation as it does not require any route construction costs.

In this context, other major cities and provinces across the country are reportedly seeking to introduce the bimodal tram.
