Large-scale discount store chains in South Korea have been seeking solutions to overcome their sluggish business.

Full of playful signs and funny characters, and littered with a wide variety of products, this store is called "Pierrot Shopping" that has recently been launched by e-Mart, the country's largest discount store chain.

This store is filled with some 40,000 items priced from 1,000 won to tens of millions of won. So even the employees don't know what's in which place.

"We are attracting young customers to visit this store and easily buy what they want after experiencing, enjoying and playing with new products..."

Lotte Mart has also opened "Market D" which offers an additional 10 percent discount on the 1,000 products which are popular in its original stores.

Operating this shop on a small-profits and quick-returns policy, the store's revenue appears to be growing fast, according to Lotte.

Another discount chain store Home Plus also began converting its outlets into warehouse stores named "Home Plus Special". The new store is designed to attract more singles, with the warehouse outlet selling merchandise in small packages carrying fresh food items.

Now, South Korea's top retail business conglomerates have been rushing to launch new types of stores to cope with worsening profitability amid rapid growth in e-commerce and stricter government regulations.
