[K-SCIENCE] Enzyme Gene for Synthetic Fibers

An enzyme gene that is able to produce synthetic fibers using microorganisms has been discovered.

These are microorganisms found in mud flats of the country's west coast.

Shown in green are enzyme genes with new functionalities capable of synthesizing the raw materials for nylon.

A South Korean research team has developed a new artificial gene circuit that reacts to specific substances in order to discover the enzyme gene.

The outcome of the team's research is significant since it has settled the sensitivity and speed issues in applying the new artificial gene circuit to the discovery of the microorganisms.

"We expect the new gene circuit method to be used to discover genes required for biosynthesis and biodegradation of new plastic materials and develop enzymes for methane conversion."

The research was published in a recent online edition of the journal "Nature Communications".
