[K-SCIENCE] Farms Using Drones, Robots

A drone is flying swiftly inside a strawberry greenhouse.

The remote-controlled pollinating drone replaces bees in fertilizing the strawberry flowers.

The new method using the drone is found to have increased the fertilization and productivity rates by nearly 30 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

"Winter fertilization is not an easy feat because bees are not very active. It seems that the drones work very well for the insemination. Moreover, the number of poor-quality fruits has been reduced a lot."

These days, it is not difficult to see drones used in farms as about 700 drones have been supplied to the country's farming areas.

One drone is known to be capable of fulfilling farming work, which requires three farmers' five-hour labor, just in 10 minutes.

Farming robots are also garnering attention.

Equipped with artificial intelligence technology, robots not only can check the state of growth of fruits, but also help farmers select and harvest ripe fruits only.

"Self-driving tractors are about to be commercialized and robots that can carry out hard work such as pest control and weeding will also be commercialized sooner or later."

The state Rural Development Administration expects robots to replace humans in the entire farming process by 2030.
